Tango Desktop is available on Pro and Enterprise plans. See plans. This article is for IT admins who deploy software to Windows devices with Microsoft Intune.
Tango Desktop for Windows ships as an MSIX package. It installs per user and can keep itself up to date without admin rights. There are two ways to deploy it with Intune. We recommend automatic updates (Option 1): your users always get the latest version, with the least friction.
⚠️ Tango Desktop version 1.x is no longer supported. If you're deploying it today, switch to the MSIX package using the steps below.
Before you start
Remove any existing Tango Desktop .msi deployment from Intune.
Download the MSIX from the Desktop download page. Pick Windows x64 or Windows ARM64 to match your devices. The file ends in
.msix.Devices need Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11.
Option 1: Automatic updates (recommended)
Tango updates itself on each device, with no admin rights needed.
Note: Don't use a Line-of-business app for this option. It expects one exact version, so Intune would report the app as failed after Tango's first update.
1. Wrap the .msix as a Win32 app
Package the .msix as a .intunewin file (with Microsoft's Win32 Content Prep Tool) and add it in Intune as a Win32 app.
2. Set install behavior to User
Set Install behavior to User. Automatic updates only work reliably when Tango is installed per user.
3. Add the install and uninstall commands
Install command (replace the file name with the one you downloaded):
powershell.exe -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Command "Add-AppxPackage -Path '.\TangoDesktop-2.0.3.0-x64.msix'"
Uninstall command:
powershell.exe -NoProfile -Command "Get-AppxPackage -Name TangoTechnology.TangoDesktop | Remove-AppxPackage"
4. Add a custom detection script
Use this as a custom detection script. It reports Tango as installed at any version, so Intune doesn't flag the app after Tango updates itself.
$pkg = Get-AppxPackage -Name 'TangoTechnology.TangoDesktop' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
if ($pkg) { Write-Output "Tango Desktop $($pkg.Version)"; exit 0 }
exit 1
Devices download updates from desktop-downloads.tango.us. If you use a firewall or proxy, make sure it's allowed. See Domains, Protocols and Ports required for the Tango Desktop App.
Option 2: IT controls versions (no automatic updates)
Tango stays on the version you deploy until you upload a new one.
⚠️ Tango Desktop stops working if it's more than about a month behind the current version. If you turn off automatic updates, upload new versions regularly.
1. Turn off automatic updates on your devices
Set this registry value on each device before Tango first runs. An Intune Remediation or platform script works.
Key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Tango Technology, Inc.\Tango DesktopValue:
DisableAutoUpdate(DWORD) =1
For example, as a PowerShell platform script:
$key = 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Tango Technology, Inc.\Tango Desktop'
New-Item -Path $key -Force | Out-Null
New-ItemProperty -Path $key -Name 'DisableAutoUpdate' -PropertyType DWord -Value 1 -Force | Out-Null
2. Upload the .msix as a Line-of-business app
In Intune, add the .msix as a Line-of-business app and assign it. Intune handles install and detection on its own.
3. Roll out a new version
Upload the newer .msix to the same app.
