What are Flexible Steps?

Flexible Steps are steps in a Tango guide that allow for different valid inputs or selections when following a process

When a step is marked as flexible:

  • Users can enter their own text in a field

  • Users can select any option from a dropdown

  • Users can choose any radio button option

This makes your guides more adaptable and reduces friction when processes vary slightly across users, teams, or scenarios.

You'll know a step is flexible when you see the flexible "tag" in the step title.

Automatic Flexibility

Tango will automatically mark a step as flexible if it detects:

  • A text input field

  • A radio button selection

  • A dropdown menu

How to toggle Flexible Steps on or off

You can adjust whether a step is flexible directly in the Tango editor. by clicking the three dot menu next to a step.

When should you use Flexible Steps?

Flexible Steps are best used when:

  • The process includes variable inputs (e.g., names, IDs, notes)

  • Users may need to choose different options depending on context

  • You want to create one guide that works across multiple scenarios

  • The exact input is not critical to completing the workflow

Example use cases

  • Entering customer information in a CRM

  • Selecting different deal stages or statuses

  • Filling out forms with non-standardized inputs

  • Choosing different options based on region, team, or use case

When should you avoid Flexible Steps?

You may want to keep a step specific when:

  • The input must be exact for the process to work

  • You are training users on a standardized workflow

  • There is a high risk of error if users choose the wrong option

To make a Flexible Step specific

  1. Open your guide in the editor

  2. Locate the flexible step

  3. Click the three dots (⋯) next to the step

  4. Select Make step specific

This will require users to follow that exact input or selection.

To make a step flexible

You can also convert a specific step into a flexible one:

  1. Open your guide in the editor

  2. Find the step you want to update

  3. Click the three dots (⋯) next to the step

  4. Select Make step flexible

This is useful for steps that weren’t automatically detected but should allow variation.
